Siberia Russia Part 8 The Slow Train

A

fter deciding to move to         be on the train for a long, long
Siberia for a year to teach     time.
at the Chita State
Technical University, I embarked      As we actually cleared the city,
on a travel odyssey unlike any        I told myself to look at it as an
other. In this entry, we pick up      adventure. An adventure? Oh, yes.
the trip on the Trans-Siberian
Railway.
                                      Of Crackers and Grape Juice
The Horror
Nutrition is an odd thing. Like
As my new Russian friend walked       many, I try to eat a healthy diet
down the hall, I reflected on the     with vegetables and so on. Of
information he had provided me        course, a stressful day at work
with a grimace. The train ride        has led to more than a few fast
from Khabarovsk to my                 food meals. On the Trans-Siberian
destination, Chita, was going to      Railway, I would've killed for
take three days. I had already        fast food.
been traveling for four days and
the thought of 3 days on a train      Contrary to what another
made me...unhappy.                    passenger had told me, the food
car on the train was open for
While reflecting on this              business. The woman in charge of
development, I had an opportunity     our car told me this in limited
to take a look at my new              English and an exasperated look
neighbors, err...fellow               on her face. Well, she didn't
passengers. They were moving in.      lie. The food car was open.
Literally. Pillows, sheets, bags      Unfortunately, the only thing it
full of food. The general             was selling were boxes of
impression was we were going to       crackers and grape juice.

                                      where you don't speak the
I'm not a big cracker fan, but        language, you are going to eat a
I'll eat them. I happen to like       pretty hefty amount of humble
grape juice...or I did. For the       pie. What the hey, we were
next 48 hours, Grae, a fellow         hungry.
traveler, and I munched crackers
and drank juice. Then we drank        After five minutes, Grae returned
juice and munched crackers. Then      to our compartment with one of
we crushed crackers and put them      those looks on his face. We had
in the juice. Then we made            lived on crackers and grape juice
feverish declarations to never        for no reason. Yes, we could buy
eat crackers or drink juice           food at every stop the train made
again. Ever.                          by just walking into the train
station. And we stopped a lot.
The Funny Part
As we pulled into a little town,
After 48 hours of crackers and        Grae and I were hanging from the
juice, I was more than willing to     doors of the train. We ran into
starve. I kept having nightmares      the station and...all they had
about the horrible things             were crackers and grape juice.
happening in my stomach. Grae         Just kidding. I am not sure what
apparently had arrived at the         we bought, but it was the best
same opinion. Cinching up his         food I've ever had.
pants, he went to hit up our
fellow travel companions for some     Next stop...Chita!
real food.
