A Tourist Excursion:

in Asia

The Trans-Manchuria Express:  This train leaves Moscow (or Beijing) each week, on a tour covering 9001 km, and lasts 8 days, including 7 nights on board. Travelers may purchase either 1st or 2nd class tickets and generally travel in compartments containing 4 berths.  The train also includes a dining car.

The train is operated by RZD Russian Railways. Russian and Chinese visas are obligatory and you are not allowed to stop along the way.  In its west to east itinerary, the train passes through Irkutsk and then veers off south towards Chita.  Upon entering Manchuria, the train continues on towards Harbin, then goes back down towards Chenyang, and finally through Tiensin, before arriving in Beijing.

The comments made about the Trans-Siberian also apply to the Trans-Manchuria route.

The Trans-Mongolia Express:  This train leaves Moscow (or Beijing) each week, but its trip is shorter than that of the Trans-Manchuria.  It lasts 7 days, including 6 nights on board. Travelers may purchase either 1st or 2nd class tickets and generally they travel in compartments containing 4 berths.  The train includes a dining car.

The train is operated by CR China Railways. Russian, Mongolian and Chinese visas are required.  Travelling from west to east, the train goes through Irkutsk and then very quickly veers to the south and on into Mongolia to Kiakhta, on towards Oulan Bator, and then directly to Beijing.  You cannot stop along the way. You can however create your own route by taking other trains travelling the same number of miles.  For example:  the Ulan Bator Express leaves Moscow twice a week so you can go from Moscow to Oulan Bator.  Then you can take Train 24 to get from Oulan Bator to Beijing.

The comments made about the Trans-Siberian also apply to the Trans-Mongolian.

The Palace on Wheels:  This deluxe express train leaves Dehli, India, on each Wednesday from October to March. Its original route takes you from Rajasthan, then passes through Jaipur, Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur Bharatpur and Agra, before returning towards Agra.  That adds up to a lot of kilometers but the train travels at night. But then in the morning after breakfast, you visit both festive and splendorous settings. There may be sumptuously dressed elephants coming to welcome you and letting you go for a ride on their back, or you might go and visit temples, palaces, tiger reserves, lakes and deserts, and then dine under the stars while listening to concerts of typical music.

Originally the cars on this train belonged to the Maharajahs. Although they've been replaced with new ones, they still resemble the originals. Equipped with air conditioning, they're like mobile luxury hotels. The private compartments are luxurious, covered with custom carpets and richly decorated wood panels. They also include private washrooms, and each coach includes a kitchen.  Also on the train are a bar car with a lounge, and two dining cars.

All travel, berths, meals, visits, transfers and handling of luggage are included in the package price.  Places are very much in demand so you'll need to reserve in advance. Anyone lucky enough to have traveled in this luxury hotel on wheels will be left with unforgettable memories.
